Corcoran was born in Edgewater, New Jersey, the youngest of 10 children in a working class Irish-Catholic family. [8] Her mother, Florence, was a household worker. Edwin W. Corcoran Jr. was her father. He moved from one job to the next during Corcoran's early years. At times, her family relied upon deliveries of free food from a local grocer. Corcoran still remembers her father as someone who would drink sometimes and did not treat her mother with respect. Corcoran was a struggle in school, and was later told that she was dyslexic. Corcoran entered high school in St. Cecilia High School Englewood, after she left her Catholic elementary school. After flunking several courses during her first year of high school, Corcoran transferred to Leonia High School in Leonia, where she graduated as a D student.
